What charities do you support?
– HBCM-CEF funding will support proposals that address critical needs in the following areas:

  • People
  • Environment
  • Animal Welfare
Does the charity have to be a non-profit?

– HBCM-CEF will only fund qualified non-profits in Vermont.
– Applicants must be in good standing with respect to, or in full compliance with, all taxes due the State of Vermont.
– Demonstrate fiscal and administrative stability.
– Deliver services addressing critical community needs

How much money do you give out in grants?
– The average grant allocation for 2022 is between $2,000 and $5,000. Organizations are strongly encouraged to diversify their funding and develop alternative sources of support. Those who have already received grants from the HBCM-CEF should not rely on subsequent grants in future years. The need is ever changing, as is our focus.
Can a non-profit receive a grant every year?
– Organizations are strongly encouraged to diversify their funding and develop alternative sources of support. Those who have already received grants from the HBCM-CEF should not rely on subsequent grants in future years. The need is ever changing, as is our focus.
When are grants awarded?
– The board will meet annually in November to review grant applications. If awarded an HBCM-CEF grant, awards will be issued in November or December of that year. Applications are due by October 1 of each year.
What types of organizations are not funded?
– Organizations that are not tax exempt under paragraph 501(C)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code

– HBCM-CEF will not fund organizations that discriminate against certain groups or individuals in the delivery of programs and service on the basis of race, religion, national origin, gender, age, sexual orientation or disability.

– Organizations that will re-grant the foundation’s gifts to other organizations or individuals, i.e. endowment campaigns or private foundations.

– Public or private primary or secondary schools.

– Athletic events or teams, bands and choirs, recreational programs, theater arts or performance arts programs or equipment.

– Individuals for any purpose.

– Lobbying activities or other political purposes.

– Fund-raising events such as walk-a-thons, telethons, dinners, balls, or other ticketed events.

– Religious organizations, unless they are engaged in programs that are non-sectarian, benefit a broad base of the community, and have a separate 501(c)(3) designation.

– We generally do not fund national organizations, unless the applicant is a local branch or chapter providing direct services to our community.

How do I apply?
– All nonprofit organizations wishing to apply for a grant must be invited by HBCM-CEF. No unsolicited requests will be accepted.
Can I nominate a non-profit charitable organization?
– Yes! All nominations must be anonymous and will be reviewed by HBCM-CEF. Fill out the form below.
